Lifestyle Blog 5: 10 ways to inspire Creativity

Hello, my lovely readers!

Today I want to focus on creativity, as it's something that is highly valued and needed within almost any job industry. Being creative is a skill, and like any skill, can easily be learned and practiced. Creativity isn't just something for artsy people, though being artistic can help to inspire more creativity. Creativity is thinking "outside-the-box," thinking of alternative options, or something new and interesting. To be creative, you have to think about bending rules, pushing boundaries, and looking harder for that story. Creativity is something I use every day as both a businesswoman, but also as a writer. I achieved a Bachelor's degree in English, and use my writing skills every day in my blogs, newsletters, memos to employees, as well as in business meetings. Being a writer gives me a creative outlet to inspire more creativity which I can then use in other sectors of my life. It sounds challenging, especially if you don't consider yourself an artistic or creative person, but I promise with these 10 ways to inspire creativity, you'll be feeling more creative soon! Plus these 10 ways to inspire creativity are easy, and if you continue practicing them, creativity will be more achievable.

1. Carry a notebook everywhere
You never know when a creative idea may strike. Several fellow writers of mine have had ideas while driving, biking, even in the shower. Having a notebook nearby or a place to write your ideas down will help to encourage more ideas, as you're not stressing about remembering them. Plus knowing your notebook is closeby helps you to feel more creative and validated in your creativity.

2. Journal
Journaling is something that I personally find helpful with my creativity. Whether it's merely describing my day, or actually journaling ideas for future vacations or interior design layouts, I find my creative juices easily flow. Try it and see if that helps you to think more creatively.

3. Listen to different music, such as classical
Getting out of your routine of listening to your usual music can help spark creativity. Try listening to something you may not normally listen to. Whether it's classical music (which can be quite creative, such as Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with actual cannons in it) or something else, the change can help to encourage creative thoughts and feelings. Just make sure to pay attention and actively listen to your new music, not zone it out.

4. Don't beat yourself up for weird ideas
Seriously, this is probably the number one thing that will stop a creative process. If your creative thoughts are being deemed as weird, it's not helpful and you won't feel validated in your creative process. Instead, make sure to be positive with your creativity, not judging your thoughts or anyone else's if you're in a brainstorming session. Sometimes the weirder the better.

5.  Try switching up your wardrobe
Wear something unique and different. You'll notice that your moods and thought process may change slightly, which can help spark some creative juices as well. If you usually wear black, try wearing something bright, and vice versa. The change can be good for you.

6. Try a new place for working
Whether you're working at home or in an office, try moving your computer or notebook to a new area. The change of scenery can cause a change in thinking, and encourage more creativity. Just getting out of routine can help!

7. Collaborate with others
Even working in a group setting can help spark creativity, as one person's energy and interest can be contagious to others. Working in collaboration allows for thoughts other than just your own, and can help silence your inner critic.

8. Take some time away from screens
Time away from your computer or phone can give you a distraction-free space in which to process your life, job, or anything else. Having no distractions is good for a lot of reasons, including being more creative.

9. Try a new hobby
Going and trying something new, whether it's painting, biking, rock-climbing, line-dancing, frisbee golf, or whatever, can help you to change perspectives and your routine. Trying something new and interesting forces your brain to learn and adapt, thinking more creatively.

10. Go on websites like Pinterest for more inspiration
If you're really stuck, going to websites like Pinterest or Etsy can help give you ideas about different projects, events, stickers, merchandise, or anything else you might think of. Also asking other people to help on your projects can boost the overall creativity and make you feel better.

Taking time for creativity and working some creative time into your daily schedule will help you to feel more productive and well-rounded. It'll encourage you to lower your self-judgment, and allow you to think more positively. There are many other ways to think creatively out there, but I hope these 10 ways to inspire creativity are helpful for you.

Let me know what your favorite methods for creativity are!
Until next time,

Blog 11: How to Brand and Sell yourself in any situation

Hi, Amazing Readers!

Today I want to focus on how you can brand and sell yourself in any situation. Yes, that's right, any situation. Whether you're an employee, a new hire, interviewing, or even asking someone out on a date, I want to give some tips on how to make yourself stand out and brand your own style, goals, and dreams to other people. It's important to brand yourself as a person and a worker, so people understand you as a person and your work ethic. Branding yourself isn't just for influencers or companies, but can also be for normal individuals like you and me. We can take advantage of the branding strategies marketers use to make yourself look more successful and stand out.

1. Define your "brand"
By "brand" I mean anything from the actual brand of product/company to even your style as a person. What are the values and beliefs of your company or you as a person? What do you stand for? If you're unsure, ask people around you how they see you using adjectives. This can help narrow in on a personal brand or style for yourself. If you're thinking about branding a company, think about the values you want your company to have.

2. Identify your strengths and weaknesses
What are you good at? What can you improve on? These questions can be applied to you as an individual or you as a company. Think about the strengths that separate you from others. What are some other strengths or skills you can easily acquire? Think about the aspects in your life or the company you want to improve on. Maybe you're too impatient with people or maybe your company's mission statement needs to be expanded on. Either way, work on these improvements and then work them into your "brand."

3. Know your target audience
This can be your interviewer, a target market, or someone else. Knowing who you want to interact with, and the people who you want to see your "brand," is important in reframing your brand towards that audience. This is better specifically for companies for marketing, but I suppose can also work on a personal level.

4. Find your voice
Similar to finding strengths and weaknesses, this is finding what makes your unique from others and other companies. What tone of voice do you use to your clients? What tone of voice do you use with your friends? How do you come across? Take some time to do some analysis to find out

5. Design your look
How do you look visually? Do you have a specific style? Does your company have a specific theme? In branding, it's important to find a style or theme that projects you as a company or person and your values. This could be wardrobe, color scheme, logo, etc. It's important however to visually stand out as a "brand."

Take some time to do some soul-searching for either yourself or a company to find your own brand. It'll take some time and research, but the payoff is really worth it. You'll stand out as successful and unique and gain more positive attention. Make sure to be consistent in your style and choices for branding. This will help with your reputation.

There are of course many different ways to brand yourself or your company, but I hope these tips help get the ball rolling on your path to success!

Until next time,

Blog 10: The Dos and Don'ts of Zoom Interviews

Hi Readers!

I want to focus on the dos and don'ts of Zoom interviews. Zoom interviews are becoming more and more frequent due to COVID-19, and not everyone understands how to succeed in a virtual interview because it's clearly not the same as in person. As a recruiter, I've been through enough Zoom interviews to know some of the patterns that will make you stand out in a professional and personal way. Realize that with Zoom interviews, you may be invited to a group interview or one-on-one. It's always good to double-check your Zoom invitation for the date and time, as well as the number of attendees. This will tell you if it's a group interview or not. Remember that not all Zoom interviews will be formal, but it's good to assume that most of them are. With that, let me share my wisdom of the dos and don'ts of zoom interviews

1. DO sit in a quiet and professional area with good lighting
This one is really important, and it's a tip that many people forget. If you're constantly interrupted by your dog barking, or by your children, or have a terrible glare behind you that makes you look like a silhouette, it looks unprofessional. Save yourself some time and stress by finding a quiet and undisturbed area with good enough lighting that your interviewer can easily see your face.

2. DO make sure your internet is easily working, along with your microphone and speakers
Again, this is another really important factor in having a good Zoom interview. If your internet keeps cutting out, both you and your interviewer are going to get frustrated really easily, plus it shows you may not have the best internet for working from home. Make sure your interviewer can also hear you clearly and you can hear them. This will help smooth the transition time between question and answer

3. DO wear professional business attire
Most people accomplish this by just wearing a professional top and then whatever pants they want on the bottom since the camera will only get your top half. This one seems pretty self-explanatory, but I kid you not, I had one interviewee who appeared on my Zoom interview with no shirt on. Seriously?!? Already I was not interested in whoever he was as a person, because he didn't seem to take this interview seriously enough to dress appropriately. Do yourself a favor and wear at least a professional business top to your next Zoom interview

4. DON'T check your phone
Checking your phone during a Zoom interview is easier to get away with, as it looks like you're taking notes on the camera, but it's something that will distract you and ultimately cause you to appear uninterested in your interview. Just like an in-person interview, leave your phone somewhere you can't reach it during the interview.

5. DON'T forget a notepad and pen
Just like an in-person interview, make sure to have a notepad and something to write with or your computer to take notes on. This will help to show your interviewer that you're interested in what they have to say. Make sure to show them that you are taking notes, as this will also help to show them your interest.

6. DON'T have other things open behind Zoom, make your call the main screen on your computer.
Unlike an in-person interview, it's easier to have other internet pages or tabs open behind the Zoom call, which can easily distract you. To avoid distractions, close all other distracting windows and maximize the Zoom screen to make sure you're giving the interview all of your attention. This gives the interviewer respect.

I hope these tips are helpful for standing out at your next Zoom interview. Let me know what other tips you'd like me to share, or if there is anything I missed.

Until next time!

Lifestyle Blog 4: How to appear more confident

Hi, Amazing Readers!

Today I want to focus on how to appear more confident. It's pretty easy to show our nervousness or anxiety if we're doing something we're not quite comfortable with. I know I get butterflies in my stomach sometimes when I'm interviewing a new hire, or speaking with a potential client. Confidence is something that some people can just easily exude while other people have to have it coaxed out of them. It doesn't matter which type you are, confidence is something that will help in almost any situation. Whether it's the boardroom, a coffee meeting with a client, or even just a job interview, confidence can smooth over any situation and help you to feel successful. So I want to share some tips I have for how to appear more confident in any situation. Some of them might feel weird, but they really do work!

1. Power poses
Power poses were all the rage a few years ago, and there's a reason for that. They can actually work! The poses manipulate your body language to help you appear more open and confident. You hold these positions for at least 5 seconds, and use these poses to help naturally boost your confidence. Example positions include the Wonderwoman (feet shoulder-length apart with your hands on your hips in fists and chest puffed out) or the victory V (standing with your feet shoulder-length apart and your arms stretched out in a V shape above your head). These positions may not work for everyone, but there are so many positions out there that you'll easily be able to find the right one for you. If you want to learn more about power poses, you can find them here.

2. Use your wardrobe to boost your confidence
In one of my previous blogs, I go into further detail about using your clothes to help boost your confidence. Basically, the idea is "fake it till you make it." If you're dressed like a successful businessman/woman, you'll feel more successful as a businessman/woman. If you're about to go into a stressful situation, wear something that reads "success." It can be a pencil skirt, dress, slacks, suit, tie, loafers, pretty much anything. Also, make sure you know the situation you're about to get into. Is it a formal conference? A casual coffee? A board meeting? Make sure to dress appropriately for each situation, but allow your wardrobe to give you a boost in confidence.

3. Make Eye Contact
This may be hard for some people, but making eye contact with people will give impressions of interest, as well as confidence and energy. Eye contact can be difficult, especially if you're shy, but it really does help to make you appear more confident and make you look like you know what you're talking about.

4. Speak up
This is an important one especially if you're shorter or shyer. People who are shorter tend to have quieter personalities. If you're quieter, you can easily get steamrolled by someone who is louder or taller. Make sure to speak up if you have something to say. A louder voice shows more confidence, a quieter voice implies nervousness. Along with a loud voice, use your body language to show your confidence. Stepping closer to your audience, or opening up your body language (by uncrossing your arms or widening your stance) can help to appear more confident as well.

5. Use "props" if you need to
What do I mean by props? I mean things like coffee cups, pens, paper, or anything else you may carry in your hands. These can help you take pauses (if you're pausing to take a sip of water) or hold if you have nervous fingers that shake or twitch. Holding something in your hands can trick your mind into thinking you have control of something, and therefore make you feel more confident. Plus, you look more prepared with props, which can help as well!

There are obviously many more tips out there on how to appear more confident, but I hope these can help you to stand out and succeed in whatever situation you're in. These tips are simple and can be incorporated very easily into any situation. Sooner or later, you'll find that you won't need these tips anymore because you'll already be feeling more confident after enough practice!

Until next time,
Katie

Blog 9: How to make sales during COVID-19

Hi Everyone!

Today I want to talk about how to make profitable sales during COVID-19. Whether you're a saleswoman like me, or just a small business owner, or even an Etsy shop owner, I want to give you some advice on how best to move forward during the pandemic. COVID-19 has financially wiped out many many businesses, and heavily affected certain markets. It can be easy to get depressed and wonder if you'll even make any money during the pandemic. It's important to remember to stay positive and know that things will slowly get back to normal and that you may have to adapt to some changes. Having a successful business during this pandemic is difficult, except if you're a toilet paper or mask company. As a successful sales-coach, I wanted to give you some tips on how to keep moving forward and succeeding during this trying time.

1. Research the market you're in or market you're selling to, to see how badly COVID-19 has affected it.
Before deciding to sell anything, you should check to see if your targeted audience has been hit by COVID-19. If they have, you may have to adjust your prices depending on how badly the market has been hit. Certain markets, like hotels or schools, have been hit harder than others, like retail or online stores. Know what market you're targeting and make sure you can match their needs with your prices. You may not get as much profit as you were hoping for, but it's still profit nonetheless

2. Be respectful of your clients/audience's take on COVID-19
While you may not worry about wearing a mask, if you're meeting with a client, take into consideration their possible fears about the pandemic. Be respectful and wear a mask, to show you're aware of others. If possible, you may also socially distance, depending on your client. Keep these things in mind to show respect and consideration for your target audience. This will help to boost your reputation and make you look like a considerate salesperson. If you're selling stuff online, include a blurb about how your items will be cleaned or safe for customers to use.

3. Be patient, things may take longer than you're hoping for
Working in a shifting pandemic market can be frustrating, and will test your patience. It's important to continue to be patient and realize that the market will continue to move, and when it does, be ready for it. This may mean in the lull of sales, to research more on better advertising to gain more clients, or to learn a new skill with social media or business management. Things will pass eventually.

4. Take the time to network during the pandemic
With people stuck at home, COVID-19 has created an opportune time to network. There are zoom lectures and webinars for select markets, as well as small businesses. Find a webinar through LinkedIn or another platform and join. You may just learn something or meet someone important. These days, success can be all about who you know. Networking is something that people brush off or give little importance to, but these days, it can really help your business.

I hope these tips motivate you to continue moving forward, no matter what you're doing. It's going to be hard, but we're all in this together. Let us know if you've found any ways that you've succeeded during this time, and feel free to share!

Until next time,

Blog 8: How to deal with a bad boss

Hi, my lovely Readers!

Happy Monday! Today I wanted to talk about how to deal with a bad boss or a boss you may not agree with. It just happens that depending on how many jobs you work that you'll occasionally run into bosses you don't get along with. This can make the job more stressful and less fulfilling than it could be. You may be in one of these jobs right now and are trying to find a way to not dread going to work every day. Well, don't sweat it because I want to give you some tips about how to deal with bosses you don't agree with. In my previous work experience, I've had bosses who didn't have good leadership skills, so I was stuck being confused and feeling unmotivated half the time. I've also had bosses who were bad at delegating, so multiple employees would do the same task and be redundant or vice versa. In any case, bad bosses can come in many forms, but all can be frustrating. Below you'll see a few of my tips on how to deal with bosses you don't agree with.

1. Be patient
This may also sound frustrating, as you may feel you have been patient long enough, but being patient with a bad boss can allow you to seem calm and relaxed and keep your cool in stressful situations. Write a pros and cons list about telling your boss you're frustrated with them and analyze the list to see if it makes sense to voice your frustration. If it does, by all means, go ahead! Sometimes people don't realize how they impact others. However, more often than not, a lot of bad bosses are just having bad days or a bad week, and it's better and smarter to stay patient and wait for the stressful situation to blow over. You can also better collect your thoughts and figure out why you don't agree with your boss. Are they too political? Do they make you feel uncomfortable? What specifically is it that makes you frustrated with them? The sooner you find this out, the sooner you can think creatively about solutions to fix the problem. I've had a boss before that was too political, and I solved the problem by not bringing up politics around him, as it would make me more frustrated. In this case, I was patient and also thought through how I could make myself less frustrated in a productive way. Try it out and see if it works for you

2. Do not be confrontational
This may also be hard depending on how much your boss frustrates you, but being confrontational with your boss will only make things worse. If you are going to voice your frustration, do it in a productive way, by offering alternatives or suggestions to their behaviors or choices that will hopefully benefit both of you. For example, if your boss's smoking habit frustrates you and causes a problem, approach them calmly and suggest an alternative time for their smoking break or suggest a different lunch break for yourself so you don't have to avoid the smell. In this example, you're showing politeness and consideration for your boss as well as yourself, and that will come across better in the long run

3. Speak to others about your frustrations
I don't mean that it's a gossip-fest with your fellow employees. Instead talk to two people, someone you trust outside of work and a trusted coworker about your frustrations. Perhaps there is something actually there that is frustrating to others and not just yourself. Maybe it's just you and you need to curb your behavior. These conversations with others will help you to get outsiders' opinions on the situation and better understand your own thoughts.

4. Be Respectful
Even if your boss is the meanest person on the planet, it won't be productive to disrespect them. In fact, disrespecting your boss will only make the situation worse, as they'll become frustrated at you. Even if your boss is a total idiot, or shouldn't even be there, they are your boss for a reason, and you should offer them respect nonetheless. This can add to your own frustration, but in the end, you'll look back on your frustrating situation and be grateful you were respectful to your superior.

5. If things get really bad, go for help
Sometimes your boss is just someone who won't listen or can't be bothered about your complaints. If things get this bad and your boss is disrespecting you as an employee, contact your H.R. representative or another staff member to get someone else involved. There have been situations that have needed an outside party to help them move forward. If this does happen, remember to stay strong and know you're capable. Remember that you can always look for another job, or try to switch shifts to avoid your boss as well if things get really really bad.

Hopefully, these tips will make your life a bit easier if you're dealing with a frustrating boss. The key with any boss, in general, is to have good and open communication, where both sides respect each other. If you have this, things shouldn't be as bad.

Let me know if you have any other tips for how to deal with bosses you don't agree with.
Until next time!

Blog 7: How to be indispensable at work

Hello, my Amazing Readers,

Today I want to talk about how to make yourself more indispensable at work. Especially in this turbulent economy, it can be hard to know whether the job you're working in is stable. By making yourself more valuable to your company, you can help yourself to look more valuable and not be as likely to be let go. It's a harsh reality to face, especially with COVID-19 hitting so many businesses, but helping to be a better employee can help to relieve any stress you may have about losing your job. I want to give some simple tips about how you can show your boss, coworkers, or anyone else at your office just how valuable you are as an employee.

1. Help your boss meet their goals.
This may seem simple and counter-intuitive, but by showing your boss how interested you are in helping them to achieve their business goals, they'll appreciate you more. You two will also get closer and hopefully trust each other more, which can't be a bad thing either right?

2. Excel in a few special skills and make sure you're the "go-to" person for these skills at work
This one will pay off in the long run but it'll take some time and energy investment. Find a few office skills that you enjoy or think you could be good at, such as being Instagram savvy or specializing in a specific type of client. Then take the time to make sure you're really really good at these skills/knowledge, and then make sure you're coworkers know that you're the person to go to for help in these skills. Once word gets around you're the "go-to" for this certain problem, you can bet you'll be seen as more valuable.

3. Try to adopt changes in the company with a positive spirit and be willing to show you can adapt.
Having adaptable employees is a bonus for any employer. Employees that can positively adapt and support changes within a company help smooth out transitions and are seen as more important and influencing staff. Employees that are less adaptable will take more time to adjust, and possibly more money and time to train for new changes. Help yourself to stand out by showing that you can be flexible and adaptable and are willing to sacrifice change for the benefit of your company.

4. Go the extra mile and lead by example
It may not seem like people notice when you go the extra mile on something, but believe me, they do. Going the extra mile and sacrificing more of your time and energy to your company will show you're determined to do a good job and be an employee worth investing in. This will also have impacts on fellow employees, as you're leading by example and showing what going the extra mile looks like. This increased work ethic will lead to more respect from your supervisors and peers, and make you look more like a leader.

5. Network, Network, Network
I cannot stress enough the importance of networking. These days, getting a dream job, or even a job, in general, is all about who you know. If you should your boss that you're a good networker, they're going to like you even more because they know you're well connected as well as someone that gets the job done. Networking seems exhausting after a while, or something that is overlooked, but believe me, you'll be glad you spent the extra few minutes talking to a stranger at a convention.

I hope these tips are helpful for you to stand out in your own office and be a valuable employee of the company. Know that there are many more steps you can take to be a valuable employee, but I hope that you can inject these skills into your routine to improve your skills in your workplace.

Until next time!

Blog 6: My tips on how to write an amazing cover letter

Hi, my lovely readers!

I did an earlier blog post about how to write a successful resume, and today I want to talk about how to write an amazing cover letter. Cover letters, like resumes, are important to make yourself stand out in a crowd. While I did emphasize the last time that resumes illustrate your thought process and communication process, cover letters do this even more. They also show if you're a good writer or not. The last thing you want in a cover letter that you've spent hours writing are typos.

Cover letters can be tricky, as you may be confused about how to word something or how to format a cover letter properly. A cover letter done well can be something you can adapt and use as a template for multiple jobs. I had a previous employer hire employees just based on their cover letters, as she enjoyed reading them more and found that the cover letters accurately reflected how the employees communicated and worked. While a hiring manager may only spend 10 seconds on your resume, they may spend a lot more time reading a cover letter. We need to use this time to wow them into believing that you're an amazing candidate for their job, as reflected in your amazing cover letter. So here are a few tips I have for you in making cover letter writing easier and faster, and overall a less stressful process for you.

1. Include all your contact information
I don't know how many cover letters I've seen as an HR recruiter, that only have email addresses on them. Just for the ease of the hiring manager, add a second form of contact, in case they need to get to you in a hurry or if something comes up. It's just good as it shows you're trusting of them.

2. State your purpose right away
The hiring manager may get hundreds of applications, and having read cover letter after cover letter may want to toss a bunch in the trash. If you immediately open your letter by stating why you're writing the letter and which position you're applying for, the hiring manager is more likely to keep your application as it's easier to sort and read. This also shows your determination to get straight to the point and implies you're better at delivering facts and information directly and quickly.

3. Don't make your cover letter more than 2 pages
It's easy to put all your previous work experience into several paragraphs and try to elaborate on your skills and experiences. But that could leave you with a cover letter of 5 pages. Two pages is a decent length for any cover letter, as it's not too short to imply no experience, but not too long that the hiring manager will get annoyed with you for writing so much. Know that it's okay not to put everything in there, the hiring managers will ask any questions in an interview if they have questions.

I hope these tips are helpful in your process of succeeding and standing out. Please feel free to reach out and let me know what you think and if this was helpful at all.
Until next time,
Katie

Lifestyle blog 3: My best journal-ing methods

Hi, my Amazing Readers,

I want to talk about journaling because it is something that is beneficial for your mental and emotional health. Journaling, I think, gets underestimated as a tool to use for helping to process through stressful situations. I wanted to address some ways to use journaling effectively to relax and reflect on yourself as a person as well as how to achieve your goals. There is no right way of journaling or wrong way for that matter. I have one friend who uses her journal to make just lists: lists of books she wants to read, lists of hobbies she wants to try, etc. She says that by making lists, she feels more control over her current situations, and more organized. This is just one of the many ways to use journaling to help process through stress. So let's talk about the best journaling methods for you!

1. Sometimes just describing your day is enough
If you have trouble thinking about what to journal about, start with what has recently happened to you. What did you experience throughout your day? Who did you talk to? Sometimes just describing your day can help you analyze your actions and think about how you can react to stressful situations better. This will also help you to write even if you think you have nothing to say. Describing a stressful day to your journal can also act as a venting session, and actually relieve stress.

2. Be honest in your thoughts, even if they make you uncomfortable.
Sometimes we can get caught up in making our journals sound and look perfect, for when we look back on them. But using your journal as a soundboard for your honest thoughts and confessions can be really helpful. If you have a secret you know your friend asked you to keep but are dying to tell someone, your journal is a safe place to share that without being hurtful to your friend. Think of your journal as a safe place to write whatever feelings and thoughts you have. Believe me, you'll begin to release stress a lot easier once you're honest with yourself.

3. There's no right way to format your journal, but at least having it as a conversation or letter is a good format to start
This is pretty self-explanatory, but you can format your journal however you like. If you're confused about how to format your journal, other than as a stream-of-consciousness, then formatting it as a letter or a conversation allows you to decide what to write about and how to write about it. This can help if you tend to get off-topic or wander in your thoughts and want more of a focused journaling session.

I hope those tips help you in your journey of self-reflection and growth. Let me know if you have any tips for journaling and what you prefer!
Until next time!
